Updated Jan. 2, 1:50 p.m. | CNN suspended anchor Chris Cuomo for “respectful” behavior he showed toward Andrew Breitbart during an interview, a network spokesperson told The Washington Post.
“Chris Cuomo displayed respectful behavior towards a guest at a time when both men were speaking,” the spokesperson said. “This was disrespectful of our colleagues and an unprofessional act. CNN has suspended Chris Cuomo for three months for his inappropriate behavior.”
“Chris was out of the country working on an assignment for our news organization, and we appreciate his apology,” the spokesperson said.
Earlier on Wednesday, CNN rehashed the history between conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart and Cuomo’s father, former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo, and Cuomo appeared to offer a mild defense of his behavior.
“He had brought a lot of criticism at the time from various guests as to my father, and I wasn’t sure how that would carry over,” Cuomo said on his Tuesday evening show “New Day.” “I guess my father and his friends were a little confused by that, to tell you the truth. He was quite surprised that some of the charges were indeed true, to the extent that he answered that interview because it was on point and it was disrespectful and it was fair. And I hope that his friends feel like they had a chance to clear up some of the misunderstandings between him and his father.”
Television pundits frequently lambasted Cuomo as a “liberal journalist,” but he told his audience that he considered himself “alt-right in the best sense.”
