Trump Visits Inaugural Parade After Lady Bird Blasts Postal Service to President's Office

The iconic annual parade made its debut in 1924 and over the years has experienced numerous mishaps — none more notorious than the 1947 crash that claimed the lives of six people, making it the most deadly balloon accident ever.

With nearly 500 balloons and more than a million spectators, the annual Thanksgiving Day parade is one of the largest holiday events.

Fireworks Tops Today’s Parade List

It was a year of firsts for the 87th Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The biggest highlight of the parade was a first appearance by a pair of drag racer driven giant inflatables.

Officials from Rapid City, South Dakota confirmed this year’s parade included America’s favorite giant inflatable dog, Paddington Bear. He was teamed up with his would-be owner, Pamela Koffman.

Koffman said the 39-foot Paddington Bear is a blessing after nearly drowning in a sea of hot air balloon fluff.

“I have got to stop you guys,” Koffman said as she reached out to her young daughter, Olivia, who sat in her lap during the parade. “I never did it so I just have to do it today.”

The pair brought the giant dog aboard an aircraft to smooth the big balloon out of the hot air balloon aisle.

2015 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

A colorful Muppet balloon made it through the 2015 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade unscathed.

One of the most anticipated balloons in the parade was the 2015 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade’s beloved and beloved pig.

Remembering The Inoperable Hot Air Balloon

Despite hours of preparation, “One World One Sky” balloon on its way down.

The General Ostrich balloon was traveling the most efficiently down the route in 2015, and the balloon’s creator, Carlos Pratts, said one of the men he was traveling with finally checked the balloon for any inaccuracies.

The balloon was all set for takeoff from the Greenwich Village corner of Bleecker and Lafayette when the balloon apparently changed its route.

Pratts said a mechanical malfunction or even a stray bolt from one of the 99 propane tanks holding the balloon together could have caused it to fly off course.

When it didn’t feel like he was gaining altitude, Pratts scrambled to locate the propane tanks and manage the balloon itself with his hands, before the pilot launched from the corner of West 13th Street and Chambers Street.

In an about face, Pratts told the group he had decided to change the route back to the previous route and ran for the Podium Pavilion, where he hovered for almost an hour before making a decision to bring the balloon down in lower Manhattan.

The balloon eventually settled onto the rear deck of a local skyscraper, falling to the ground near Fourth Avenue near 3rd Street.

Pratts later told The New York Times: “The first moment I saw the detour, I knew I had gone too far.”

As always, Macy’s treats each year’s float to a well-deserved makeover.

This year, in anticipation of the parade’s 88th edition, Macy’s invited 32 balloon designers and their handlers to a summer brainstorming session at the Mudd Coloring School in Brentwood, New Jersey.

Since 2015, 11 giant balloons have been retired from the parade, while 29 more have been added.
