Messi made similar comments in 2016 when Barcelona were knocked out at the semi-final stage by Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

Earlier this month Barcelona’s president, Luis Suárez, publicly backed his national team captain to have the best chance of an unprecedented treble of La Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League titles this season.

Suárez and Messi led Barça to their fifth Champions League triumph in six seasons last season, but lost to Manchester City.

Although success with Messi remains elusive, PSG is the one team that has the right personnel to do it again according to the Argentinian.

“You already knew that; the way they play, the amount of players, [the] stadiums that they play in, the organisation,” Messi told CNN. “I don’t have many rivalries but in the Champions League it is PSG, or Manchester City, Real Madrid, Juventus – who knows?

“I never thought that PSG was the ideal place to win the Champions League again. When we have the chance to win, we try to do it. With PSG, I don’t think it is the ideal place to have your second victory.”
