Biden to Host Summit for Democracy in America Next Year

Former Vice President Joe Biden has invited the government of Taiwan to the “Summit for Democracy” he is to host in America early next year, the same kind of bonhomie that would signal the support of the official Taiwanese government which has been battered recently by the Trump administration.

The Washington summit is scheduled for January 18th and 19th to coincide with the first half of Biden’s presidential term. During a rare visit to Taiwan earlier this year, Biden called President Tsai Ing-wen a “major-power head of state” and expressed support for Taiwan’s independence, an attitude at odds with the sentiments of the Trump administration which has normalized ties with China and threatened it over its claims in the South China Sea.

Biden is also to hold a meeting with Taiwan’s premier and other government officials in December, followed by a visit to the island as it comes to the end of its “Law Day” celebration, a local event which has served for decades as a campaign platform for Taiwanese politicians seeking to curry favor with voters.
